Oleander, also known as willow leaf peach and half-year red, is a large evergreen shrub of the family Apocynaceae. It is often trimmed into a small tree-like potted plant with a plant height of 2 to 3 meters. The flowers are large in size, with dense inflorescences, rich red, and double petals. They have high ornamental value and are very popular household plants. But do you know the key points of home care for oleander?
temperature
Temperature
Oleander prefers a warm and humid climate and is slightly cold-tolerant. It can overwinter in the open field in warm areas. Household potted plants in the Beijing area can bundle their branches and bag them and place them in a leeward and sunny place to survive the winter, otherwise they are prone to frost damage. Smaller plants should be moved indoors for maintenance before frost, and then moved outdoors for routine management in April of the following year. It can survive the winter in the open under the microclimate conditions south of the Yangtze River.
Lighting
Oleander prefers a growing environment with sufficient sunlight and tolerates a little shade. During the cultivation and maintenance process, the lighting time should be guaranteed to be no less than six hours a day. During home maintenance, place it in a place exposed to direct sunlight such as a windowsill or balcony.
Moisture
Proper watering is the key to managing oleander. Improper watering in winter and summer can cause leaf drop, flower drop, and even death. Water once a day in spring and once a day in the morning and evening in summer to keep the pot soil moisture at about 50%. Leaves should be sprayed with water frequently. Excessive dryness will cause leaves to fall and wilt easily. You can water less in winter, but the pot soil moisture should be maintained at about 40%. Leaves should be flushed with clean water to remove dust.
Nutrition
Organic soil mixed fertilizer accounting for about 20% of the pot soil should be maintained. If used for chicken manure, 15% is sufficient. Fertilization time: once before Qingming Festival and once after Autumnal Equinox.
Method: Dig a circular trench around the pot, apply fertilizer and cover with soil. After fertilizing during the Qingming Festival, topdress with bean cake water mixed with water every ten days or so; after fertilizing at the Autumnal Equinox, topdress with bean cake water or peanut cake water, or ten times the amount of chicken manure liquid, every ten days or so. If the above-mentioned fertilizer is not available, you can use human urine that has been decomposed for more than seven days and add five to seven times of water, pour it along the edge of the pot, and then water it thoroughly. Fertilizers containing high amounts of nitrogen should be applied sparingly, lightly, sparingly and frequently to prevent root rot.
