The Legend of Agave

Tequila is native to tropical America, and its hometown is Mexico. And this legend is related to Mexico.

Legend has it that before the American continent was discovered, there was a tribe in ancient Mexico City. They were peace-loving but would resist foreign aggression. However, the later leader Metemoc wanted to conquer other tribes by force.

In his neighboring tribe, the leader of the tribe had a beautiful daughter. Metemoc sent a messenger to the leader and asked to marry his daughter. But the leader refused, and Metemoc felt insulted, so he launched a war and captured the tribe in one night.

From then on, they became barbaric and warlike, igniting wars in all directions, and soon all tribes were under the rule of Mettemoc.

One day, Metmoc began to move towards the mountain tribes in the north again. He wanted to marry the daughter of the tribal leader. If the leader did not agree, he would start a war. And before that, he met the Moon Goddess. The Moon Goddess said: "You have done many evil things. You have destroyed so many beautiful fields and killed so many kind people. Now you want to force a beautiful girl to be your wife. Do you know who would fall in love with such a cruel person as you?" "Human?"

Metemock was very disturbed and in a daze, feeling guilty about what he had done before. So the next day, Mettemoc decided not to start another war. After negotiating with the leader of the mountain tribe, he would not attack them even if he did not want his daughter to marry him.

As a result, the tribe leader refused to marry his daughter to Metemoc. Mettemoc restrained himself and vowed to change his past and make amends for his past sins from now on. He led his troops back to his hometown, and through his efforts, peace returned to the tribe, and the leaders of other tribes also eliminated their fear of him.

Seven months later, Metmoc was again preparing to propose marriage to the leader of the mountain tribe. Metemoc invited priests and wizards and performed rituals. During the ceremony, Metemoc met the Water God. The Water God told him that it was good to want to change his ways, but relying on personal strength alone was not enough. Only by following God can he always do good things. Thus, Metmoc becomes a beautiful agave.

Since then, agave has appeared on the plateau of ancient Mexico. Local Indians use its juice to make wine, its fibers to weave cloth, and its branches and leaves to build roofs.

All people long for peace, but hate war, and even more hate those who start war in order to occupy other people's homes. Just like the cruel Metemoc, although he later tried to reform, he was turned into a tequila and was used by people forever to atone for his sins.
