Divide and plant into pots: Place the divided rhizomes into the soil and plant 1-2 plants in each pot. Growth environment: A shaded place in summer, a sunny place in late autumn, and maintained at 2-3°C after frost. The maintenance steps are different throughout the year and should be managed on a monthly basis.

The substrate for hosta flowers to grow

The so-called growth substrate is soil, and the substrate is more modern. Hostas should be chosen from soil with good drainage. The bottom of the flower pot is usually covered with a layer of soil with larger particles, such as slag, peat, and perlite, to speed up the drainage at the bottom. The rest is done with rice soil, pond mud, and leaf humus soil. Just mix.

How to propagate hosta flowers

Hostas are mainly propagated by division, and division is usually carried out in spring and autumn.

Take root divisions

April to May or October to November is the best season for division. The branches can be divided when the leaves turn yellow. Take out the hosta, take out the root soil, divide the rhizome into segments, and keep at least 2 to 3 buds in each segment. Pay attention to retaining the root system, so that it can survive easily.

Plant in separate pots

Put the prepared substrate into the pots, be sure to place them in order, first thick and then fine. Bury the divided rhizomes into the soil. Plant 1 to 2 plants in each pot, but do not plant them too densely, otherwise they will affect flowering. After planting, pour a small amount of water and keep it under view.

Host

Potted hostas should be moved to the back balcony or shaded area for maintenance in summer to prevent direct sunlight.

In other seasons, put it in a semi-dark place. In late autumn, when the sunlight is weak, you can put it in a sunny place for maintenance, which is beneficial to its growth and flowering.

After frost, it can be moved indoors and the temperature can be maintained at 2℃~3℃ to survive the winter safely. It can be moved outdoors in April.

Monthly management of hostas

Different management measures are required for months with different specifications. The following are listed below and should be completed in the current month:

The temperature in January is low, so it is necessary to check whether the rhizomes are frozen.

Perform normal maintenance in February, ensure room temperature, and do not freeze the roots.

When winter ends in March, the hosta ends its dormant period and enters the growth period. It is necessary to loosen the soil and fertilize.

In April, move it outdoors for maintenance and place it in a semi-shade place to avoid direct sunlight.

In May, the plants can be further divided according to their growth. (You don’t need to divide the plants)

June enters the rainy season. Place the plants in a shelter from the rain and drain them in time after the rain.

Hosta begins to bloom in July, and it is necessary to apply phosphate fertilizer and water appropriately to ensure that the flowers bloom.

In August, the hosta is in its flowering stage, so it should be pruned in time to remove the withered flowers and leaves.

Hosta flowering is coming to an end in September. Pay attention to cleaning up the dead flowers and dead stems to avoid the occurrence of diseases and insect pests.

In October, when the hosta wilts, you can choose to divide the plants or harvest the fruits and collect the seeds to dry.

Hostas enter the dormant period in November, and the rhizomes and dormant buds can be left in the open for overwintering.

Repot in December and cover the roots with fine soil to prevent freezing. Clear dead leaves from the ground.
