Dahlia growth characteristics

(1) It likes moisture and is afraid of waterlogging. Dahlias are afraid of drought and avoid standing water. This is because dahlias have fleshy roots and the roots are prone to rot if they are overwatered. However, its leaves are large, its growth is lush, and it requires more water. If the water cannot be replenished in time after wilting due to lack of water, and exposed to sunlight, the edges of the leaves may become scorched, or the base leaves may fall off in severe cases. Therefore, the principle of "dry and water thoroughly" should be followed when watering.

(2) Like fertility and fear excessiveness. When planting dahlias, you should choose fertile, loose soil. In addition to applying base fertilizer, you must also topdress. Usually from mid-to-late July until flowering, thin liquid fertilizer is applied every 7-10 days, and the concentration of fertilizer should be gradually increased to make the stems grow longer and stronger, and the leaves are dark green and stretched.

(3) Like the sun and fear the shade. Dahlias like full sun. If placed in a shaded place for a long time, the growth will be poor, the root system will be weak, the leaves will be thin, the stems will be thin, the flowers will be small and light-colored, and they may even fail to bloom. Only by planting it in a sunny place can the plant grow strong and bloom bright flowers.

(4) Like coolness and fear heat. Dahlia likes a cool climate during its flowering period, with temperatures around 20°C, and grows best. Planted in North China and other places, it can grow well from late spring to late autumn. However, it is afraid of direct exposure to the scorching sun in hot summer, especially when it is sunny after rain. At this time, it should be slightly shaded to grow better.
