Different types of flowers have different germination periods for seeds. Some seeds take months or even years to germinate, and artificial germination of seeds can shorten their dormancy period.
Water immersion treatment
Water soaking treatment
The seeds of redbud, pearl plum, weigela and other flowers have a short dormancy period and are easy to germinate. Soak the seeds in warm water between 40 degrees and 60 degrees1 -You can sow directly after 2 days. Some flower seeds have gelatinous and waxy seed coats, such as torch trees. The seeds must be soaked in 90-degree water first and allowed to cool naturally for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and absorb water, thereby promoting seed germination.
Notes
When treating seeds with water soaking method, the water should be changed frequently. The time when the water temperature exceeds 60-90 degrees should not exceed half or an hour, and then the water temperature should be lowered to 40 degrees. below, otherwise the embryo will die easily.
Low temperature treatment
Prickly pear, Wintersweet, forsythia, lilac and some herbaceous flowers sown in autumn require a certain period of low temperature (temperature between 0-10 degrees) to break the dormancy of the seed embryo and promote seed germination.
Operation method
Mix the seeds evenly with sand with a humidity of 60%, put it into a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly and put it in a flowerpot, and then bury the whole flowerpot 40 -60cm deep in the open ground. Or you can put the seeds in the refrigerator at 3-5 degrees for two or three months, and wait until spring to sow. You can also sow seeds in autumn and wait for the seeds to germinate in the following spring after natural freezing in winter.
Variable temperature treatment
Tassels, peonies The seeds of flowers such as peony and peony have the habit of double dormancy of radicle and hypocotyl. The radicle needs to break dormancy for one month or more at 25-32 degrees, and the hypocotyl needs to break dormancy for one month at 3-5 degrees. or above to break hibernation. When handling this type of seed, mix it with wet sand before sowing, and then switch to low temperature after a period of high temperature.
Notes
When seeds are subjected to variable temperature treatment, the high temperature period and freezing period must be sufficient, otherwise it will be difficult for the seeds to emerge after sowing.
