To grow watermelons, it is best to choose sandy soil with deep soil, loose and fertile soil, good drainage performance, and convenient irrigation. Before sowing, the soil needs to be prepared and fertilized, and the melon field must be watered thoroughly before planting. When pruning branches and vines, the three-vine pruning method is generally used. Water and fertilizer management should be adjusted and supplemented accordingly according to the growth stage of watermelon. Planting time can be determined based on early or late maturing watermelon varieties. Early-maturing varieties are generally planted in March-April, and autumn watermelons are sown in mid-to-late July.
1. Watermelon planting technology
1. Planting site selection: It is best to choose sandy soil with deep soil, loose and fertile soil, good drainage performance, and convenient irrigation.
2. Land preparation and fertilization: After selecting the planting site, you need to prepare the field before sowing, and apply base fertilizer mainly with high-quality organic fertilizer and cake fertilizer, supplemented by inorganic fertilizer. The melon field needs three ditches, including digging side ditches, waist ditches, and surrounding ditches to improve the drainage and irrigation system of the fields.
3. Planting: In the afternoon of the day before sowing, the melon field needs to be watered thoroughly. When sowing, control the distance between seeds so that they are not too sparse or too dense.
4. Pruning and pressing: Generally, the three-vine pruning method is used. Do not prune branches on rainy days to prevent disease infection. When the vines grow to about 50cm, you can use soil to press the vines, once every 3-4 sections, and press each vine 2-3 times.
5. Top dressing: When the young melons grow to the size of eggs, they need to be top-dressed with expanded melon fertilizer in time according to the growth conditions of the plants.
6. Water: The water requirement is low during the seedling stage. Water as little or as little as possible to allow the seedlings to form a developed root system. Before flowering and fruit setting, the amount of watering should be controlled to prevent excessive growth; after fruit setting, sufficient water supply should be ensured to help the fruit expand and increase weight.
2. When to plant watermelon
Determine planting time according to early-maturing or late-maturing watermelon varieties. Early-maturing watermelons can be sown from mid-December of the previous year to March of the following year, and the fruit maturity period is from March to June. Medium-ripe watermelons can be planted from April to June, and the fruiting period is from July to September. Autumn watermelons need to be sown in mid-to-late July and can be harvested around late September.
