Clematis are divided into three types: spring flowers, summer flowers and autumn flowers according to their flowering time. Spring flowers are also called early flowers. Because they bloom early, they should not be pruned in spring. Wait until autumn and prune the branches that are too dense and too long. Summer flowers should be pruned moderately and lightly in spring to retain the overall structure. The branches have about 7 nodes. Autumn flowers need to be pruned again in spring. Cut off most of the branches and keep 3-7 nodes. In addition, the remaining flowers should be removed after flowering to reduce nutrient consumption.

1. Spring flowering types
Spring flowering types are also called early-flowering clematis species, including their variants, cultivars and hybrids. Because it blooms very early, the flowering period is mostly in spring. Therefore, it is not advisable to prune after spring. Just remove the dead branches to avoid affecting its flowering. However, after entering the dormant period in autumn, proper pruning is required. Cut off branches that are too dense and shorten those that are too long to promote the germination of new branches in the second year. In addition, the remaining flowers should be removed after flowering to avoid wasting nutrients.
2. Summer flower types
The main type of summer flower is Clematis grandiflora. This type usually blooms in late spring or early summer, so pruning should be moderate and light in early spring. Keep the overall structure and trim branches that are too long. Usually, 2-6 nodes are cut off and more than 7 nodes are retained. This allows it to continue to bloom on the old branches and is also conducive to the growth of new branches. After flowering, prune the remaining flowers and cut off the branches that have bloomed in July so that they can bloom again in October.
3. Autumn flower types
Autumn flowering types are also known as late flowering clematis species. This type of flowering time is late, usually blooming in late summer and early autumn, and some flowering period will last until October. Due to the long growth time, heavy pruning is required after spring. Cut off most of the branches and keep 3-7 nodes. After flowering, cut off the remaining flowers so that they can bloom again.
