For bougainvillea grafting, the same purple flower should be used as rootstock. Cut and flatten the trunk of the rootstock, leaving a 2-3 cm opening in the middle. Use healthy branches of the current year as scions, retaining leaves and 2-3 buds. Cut the bottom into a wedge shape, about 3 cm long. Insert the bottom of the scion into the gap, tie it securely with tape, cover it with a bag after spraying water, and then wrap it with newspaper to avoid direct sunlight and wait for it to survive.

1. Rootstock Selection

Bougainvillea generally uses the same purple flower as the rootstock. It is required to grow well and be free from diseases and insect pests. It will be difficult to use other flowers as rootstocks, but grafting the same species is more conducive to its growth.

2. Scion treatment

Choose healthy and strong branches for scions, and use new branches that grow in the current year, rather than old branches and leggy branches. Leaves and 2-3 buds should be retained on the branches. Prune the branches after preparing the rootstock. The branches should not be left for a long time after being cut. It can be stored in clean water for a short period of time, but not for more than two days.

3. Grafting

Cut the stem of the rootstock, smooth the wound, and make a longitudinal cut in the middle, leaving a gap with a depth of about 2-3 cm. Remove the lower leaves of the scion, and then cut the bottom into a wedge shape, about 3 cm in length. Insert the bottom of the scion into the gap in the rootstock so that the surfaces of the two wounds fit together. Part of the scion wound should be exposed to facilitate healing.

4. Bandaging and healing

Use tape to securely tie the two together. Be sure to cover the wound completely to avoid bacterial infection and disease. After wrapping, you can put it in a plastic bag to effectively moisturize it. You can also wrap it in newspaper to avoid direct sunlight. Generally, it can survive in two weeks. The tape should be removed after one month and maintained normally.
