Plum blossom grafting is usually done in summer or autumn, with summer in July-August and autumn in September-October. Mountain peaches, peaches, apricots, etc. are usually used as rootstocks. The grafting methods can be bud grafting, cleft grafting and ventral grafting. Bud grafting requires cutting a shield-shaped bark from the mother tree with intact axillary buds, and inserting it into the T-shaped incision of the rootstock. Split grafting is similar to vent grafting, in that the bottom of the branch is cut into a wedge shape and inserted into the cut of the rootstock.
1. Grafting time
1. Grafting time
The time for plum blossom grafting is generally in summer or autumn. In summer, it is mostly chosen from July to August, and in autumn, it is from September to October. The temperature at this time is higher, and the rootstock and scion are more likely to heal. If the temperature is too low, its survival will be affected. It should be noted that grafting should generally be avoided during the rainy season because too much rain is not conducive to plant recovery.
2. Grafting method
1 , Bud grafting: Plum blossoms are often grafted using bud grafting in the north. Select strong branches that are 1-2 years old and use the full axillary buds in the middle and upper parts as scions. First, make a crosswise cut about 0.5 cm above the axillary bud, to a depth that reaches the xylem, and then cut vertically from the usually long left and right sides, cut it into a shield shape, flatten the back, and remove the xylem. Cut a T-shaped incision 5-6 cm high on the rootstock, insert the scion into it, and tie it with a plastic strip.
2. Splicing: The method of chopping is relatively simple. Split the top of the rootstock in the middle to a depth of 2-3 cm. Choose healthy plum blossom branches, preferably with buds on them, and generally smaller in diameter than the rootstock. Cut the bottom end into a wedge shape, insert it into the cut of the stock, and wrap it with plastic film to prevent air and moisture from entering.
3. Abdominal grafting: The method of abdominal grafting is similar to bud grafting. It is moved from the epidermis of the rootstock diagonally without cutting it off. The depth is about 2-3 cm. Select a suitable branch, generally not too long, cut the bottom into a wedge shape, insert it into the cut of the rootstock, ensure that the cambium layer is close, and then wrap it with plastic film.
3. Rootstock Selection
Grafting There are many rootstocks to choose from for plum blossoms. In addition to this rootstock, peach, mountain peach, apricot, plum and other trees are often used as rootstocks. These have good affinity. Among them, peach tree grafting has a high survival rate but a short lifespan, while apricot tree grafting has slow growth but a long lifespan.
